The Basics of Backgammon Tactics – Part One

[ English ]

The goal of a Backgammon game is to shift your checkers around the game board and get those pieces off the game board faster than your opposing player who works harder to achieve the same buthowever they move in the opposite direction. Succeeding in a match in Backgammon requires both tactics and good luck. Just how far you will be able to shift your chips is up to the numbers from rolling a pair of dice, and the way you shift your chips are determined by your overall playing tactics. Players use differing strategies in the different parts of a match based on your positions and opponent’s.

The Running Game Strategy

The aim of the Running Game technique is to entice all your pieces into your inner board and get them off as fast as you could. This strategy focuses on the pace of advancing your chips with absolutely no efforts to hit or barricade your opponent’s checkers. The ideal time to use this strategy is when you believe you might be able to move your own checkers a lot faster than the opposing player does: when 1) you have a fewer pieces on the board; 2) all your chips have past your opponent’s checkers; or 3) your opposing player doesn’t employ the hitting or blocking plan.

The Blocking Game Tactic

The primary goal of the blocking strategy, by its name, is to stop your competitor’s pieces, temporarily, while not fretting about moving your pieces quickly. Once you’ve established the blockage for the competitor’s movement with a few chips, you can shift your other checkers quickly from the game board. You will need to also have an apparent strategy when to withdraw and move the pieces that you employed for the blockade. The game becomes intriguing when the competitor uses the same blocking strategy.
