In extraordinarily general terms, there are 3 fundamental tactics used. You want to be agile enough to hop between strategies instantly as the action of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This is composed of creating a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to manage, to barricade in the opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate tactic at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.
The Blitz
This is comprised of locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your challenger tosses an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is then in big-time trouble taking into account that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!
The Backgame
This strategy is where you have 2 or more pieces in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point filled by at least 2 of your checkers.) It must be played when you are extremely behind as this action greatly improves your opportunities. The strongest locations for anchor spots are close to your competitor’s lower points and also on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is important for a powerful backgame: besides, there’s no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this straight away, while your challenger is moving their pieces home, seeing that you do not have any other spare pieces to shift! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position until your opponent provides you a chance to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opponent to get them in this situation!
