In extraordinarily general terms, there are 3 main strategies used. You want to be agile enough to hop between game plans quickly as the action of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This comprises of building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you can achieve, to lock in the opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate strategy at the start of the game. You can build the wall anywhere inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game continues.
The Blitz
This involves locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your competitor rolls an early two and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is then in big-time dire straits considering that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!
The Backgame
This course of action is where you have two or higher checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at least 2 of your checkers.) It must be employed when you are extremely behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The strongest areas for anchors are close to your competitor’s smaller points and also on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is important for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your opponent is moving their pieces home, taking into account that you do not have any other extra pieces to shift! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up till your opposer gives you a chance to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your competitor to get them in this case!
