In astonishingly general terms, there are three basic strategies used. You want to be able to hop between tactics instantly as the action of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This is composed of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you might manage, to barricade in your opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate tactic at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anywhere inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game continues.
The Blitz
This is comprised of closing your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. For example, if your opposer rolls an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your competitor is now in big-time trouble due to the fact that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!
The Backgame
This plan is where you have two or more pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position filled by at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It needs to be used when you are significantly behind as this plan greatly improves your opportunities. The strongest areas for anchor spots are close to your competitor’s smaller points and also on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is crucial for an effectual backgame: besides, there’s no reason having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this straight away, while your competitor is getting their pieces home, taking into account that you do not have any other additional pieces to shift! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up until your opponent provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a great idea to try and get your opposer to get them in this case!
